Horseman, Pass by

Narrated by the young Lonnie Bannon, HORSEMAN, PASS BY is the story of Lonnie's grandfather Homer Bannon, owner of a ranch, who discovers hoof-and-mouth disease among his cattle. Homer's stepson Hud wants to unload the cattle on unsuspecting buyers, but as the story moves on, it becomes evident that the cattle will have to be destroyed. Lonnie becomes attracted to Halmea, a black woman who helps on the ranch, but because of race and age differences their relationship proves to be a frustrating one. From this book came the movie HUD, starring Paul Newman.
