In this work, written by Laxness in the 1950s, a farmer named Steinar becomes enamored of Mormonism, leaves his ancestral farm in Iceland, and travels to Salt Lake City, where he embraces the religion (and the polygamy that goes with it). He returns home as a Mormon missionary and ends up on his old farm--now a ruin which he proceeds to reclaim.
